A.m.n.e.s.i.a - Chapter 2

"Tomorrow night's race is very important, make sure you get there on time," he heard Nicholas say. Barely listening, Edison's eyes wandered around blindly on the crowded streets ahead as he sat quietly in the passenger seat, while his friend drove.

Illegal street racing was his job, thriving on the excitement and speed; he was one of the best racers around. But even that was losing its appeal to him, nothing appealed to him anymore, not since Gillian left him.

It seem like only yesterday that she went to XXX street like he told her to, demanding an apology from him for nearly running over her sister.

"Hey you, I believe you owe my sister an apology," his lips immediately slanted into an amused smirk, recognizing the female voice coming from behind him. Excusing himself from Nicholas and a few of his other buddies, he turned around coming face to face with the feisty girl from yesterday, behind her, he recognized was her sister, the girl he almost ran over.

"You're pretty gutsy," he commented, drinking in the sight of the beautiful creature standing before his eyes. "Do you know who I am?"

"I don't care who you are, you can be the Queen of England for all I care. You owe my sister an apology," she retorted.

"Gill, let's leave. Mom and Dad are going to be so mad when they find out we came here," he heard the feisty girl's sister begging her in a shaky voice, obviously uncomfortable by the rowdiness of the crowd surrounding the area.

"No, we came here for an apology and we won't leave until we get one," the feisty girl said, glaring straight at him.

Grinning mischievously, he suddenly crushed his lips onto hers, forcing her mouth open with his tongue. She struggled but he only held her tighter. Moments later when he finally released her, he leaned over and whispered into her ear, "My name is Edison Chen. Remember that."

"Because one day, you'll be my girl," he said before turning to walk away, leaving her behind to fume.

He didn't know what possessed him to kiss her that day, all he knew was he had wanted her ever since the first time he laid eyes on her.

"How's my girl doing?" he teased, strolling up from behind when he recognized her familiar figure on a practically deserted street late one night.

Instead of sending a smart remark back his way, she was quiet. He took a curious look at her face and realized something was wrong, her eyes were puffy and red and her skin was flushed.

"What's wrong? Why are you crying?" the feeling of overwhelming concern washing over him. It was irrational, he barely knew her but the devastation on her face tugged at his heart.

"None of your business. Leave me alone," she said, walking faster, avoiding his eyes.

Instead of leaving, he just followed her from behind. He wondered if she even realized that he was behind her but she showed no signs of noticing his presence.

After an hour of walking, they arrived at the harbor where she had taken refugee on one of the stone benches, looking out at the water. He continued to observe her from a distance until her voice interrupted his thoughts.

"You can come over and sit too, if you want."

He complied but remained quiet, sitting besides her.

Soon, all that surrounded them were the sounds of blowing wind and crashing waves. Despite the circumstances, he felt surprisingly comfortable, almost peaceful.

Barely noticeable, he felt pressure on his side, when he turned to investigate; he saw her leaning on him, asleep.

Hours later, he continued to sit staring out into the open waters until her voice brought him back to reality.

"Why didn't you leave?"

He looked to his side to see her still leaning on him, eyes staring straight ahead.

"I don't know. Didn't feel like it?" Even he didn't know why he stayed with her, missing a big race. It just felt right to be there.

"I think I'm going to leave now. Thanks for everything."

"I'll take you home."

When they reached the front of her building, she asked for his cell phone and punched in a few numbers before handing it back to him.

"Don't forget to call," she winked before entering the building.

He later on found out the reason for her being upset that day, her pet of many years had died; and somehow, fate had took the opportunity to bring them together. From that day on, the two were practically inseparable but who would have been able to predict the heartaches that awaited them. They were young and in love.

Snapping out of his thoughts, his eyes once again wandered aimlessly until a certain girl on the street caught his attention.

Gillian.

The girl resembled Gillian.

"Stop!" he screamed, already opening the car door forcing Nicholas to brake instantly.

Running out of the car to the crowded spot by a crystal shop where the girl that resembled Gillian stood before, he search frantically but couldn't see her again. Had it been his mind playing tricks on him? No, the girl looked exactly like Gillian except she looked a bit more mature and her hair was shorter.

Turning in circles searching every face he saw among the crowd of pedestrians, receiving curious glances in return, he stopped when someone tapped him on the shoulder. He turned immediately, to see Nicholas panting breathlessly.

"What happened? Why did you just suddenly jump out of the car?" Nicholas asked, his breathing slowly stabilizing.

"Gill! I saw Gill," Edison said wildly, still searching around.

"Char, where are we going? I thought you said you wanted to go to the crystal shop?" Gillian asked, confused by Charlene sudden rush to leave. It had been her younger sister's idea to visit the crystal shop but now, Charlene was half running and half dragging her away.

"Uh...I just remember that I have something important to do at home," Charlene explained in an almost panicking voice, eyes avoiding hers.

Gillian found Charlene's sudden change in behavior extremely odd but decided to keep quiet. There were many times she wondered if her sister was hiding something from her, she wasn't sure if it was merely an overactive imagination on her part or whether that was indeed true. In general, Charlene was hard to understand because she always kept everything to herself.

Gillian often wondered if the two were always this distant? Or did it only begin after her amnesia?

It would be wonderful if she could speak to someone that knew her before the accident other than Charlene but unfortunately, they had just moved back from overseas not too long before the accident therefore barely knew anyone in the area, at least that's what Charlene told her. To make matters worse, immediately after she was discharged from the hospital, Charlene took her to their new home located in a secluded area because it was better for her condition. She never even had a chance to see their old apartment.
